Overview
NEA would like to gather insights into the industry’s interest and commercial viability for alternative disposal technologies to treat mixed municipal solid waste in Singapore.
Municipal solid waste collected by public and general waste collectors are currently incinerated to generate electricity, which is then exported to the national grid. Up to 90 per cent volume reduction of waste is achieved through incineration and the residual ash is landfilled. Through this request for information, NEA aims to assess alternative disposal technologies that can further reduce carbon emissions and reduce residues that have to be landfilled, while yielding higher value products with sustainable offtake demand.
Proposals should illustrate their financial viability over their projected lifespans and include cost, land requirements and strategies to minimise environmental impacts.
NEA intends to embark on a follow-up Request for Proposals, should there be suitable proposals from this RFI. As part of that phase, NEA may consider allocating waste to shortlisted parties for use in pilot trials. The pilot trials will allow NEA to assess the technical feasibility and economic viability of new alternative waste treatment technologies as part of Singapore’s future waste management solutions.
