Public cleaning is very manpower intensive. In Singapore’s ever-tightening manpower landscape, the current manual mode of public cleaning is not sustainable in the long term. NEA works closely with its cleaning service providers (SP) as well as the community to find ways to improve cleaning productivity and efficiency and shift away from manual mode of cleaning. In the cleaning of private estates, vehicles parked by the roadside is a major obstruction to the safe operation of mechanical road sweepers and they also obstruct the cleaners cleaning the roadsides.
To enable the deployment of mechanical road sweepers to clean the estates effectively, NEA introduce the Alternate Roadside Parking programme as a trial since 2019 at selected estates, whereby we work closely with the grassroots and local community to park their vehicles on one side of the road on the day and time when the other side of the road is being cleaned. Signages are installed on lampposts in the estates to remind residents of the cleaning days and the side of the road that they can park their vehicles on those days. Information pamphlets are also distributed prior to the residents so that they can adjust their parking arrangement accordingly.
As at Dec 2024, 33 private estates had participated in the trial and showed good response and support for the programme. The cleanliness levels of these estates had also improved with the better cleaning coverage.
If your estate wishes to participate in the programme, please contact NEA Division of Public Cleanliness (DPC)
