Objectives

The Weather Science Research Programme (WSRP) aims to enhance Singapore's ability to understand and predict tropical urban weather, including extreme weather events arising from climate change. The WSRP focuses on improving weather prediction for Singapore and the region by incorporating the latest scientific and technological developments in this area. Managed by the Climate and Weather Research Programme Office (CWRPO), the WSRP is jointly delivered through the Climate and Weather Research Alliance Singapore (CAWRAS), a national research platform established by NEA, Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Nanyang Technological University Singapore (NTU Singapore), and National University of Singapore (NUS).

 


Research Areas

There are four broad R&D areas under the WSRP:
  1. Observations: Improve the use of novel observations data, including satellite and radar data, through advanced data assimilation techniques to enhance understanding of local weather patterns and improve predictive capabilities;
  2. Next-Generation Models: Develop advanced next-generation weather/climate modelling systems tailored for tropical regions by representing local processes to provide faster, more accurate, and higher-resolution weather forecasts for Singapore and Southeast Asia;
  3. Regional Reanalysis: Produce a comprehensive high-resolution historical weather dataset for Southeast Asia for past 50 years, providing detailed reconstruction of past weather patterns to support understanding of historical extreme weather events and training of next-generation AI/ML models; and
  4. Post-Processing: Develop and apply novel processing techniques to better use weather model forecasts to optimally extract valuable weather information and enable improved weather prediction for various applications and sectors.

The WSRP incorporates Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning (AI/ML) methods as a cross-cutting theme across all four R&D areas, leveraging AI/ML to enhance the development of novel weather prediction products.
