Smoking Prohibition in Educational Institutions and Public Service Vehicles

Under the Smoking (Prohibition in Certain Places) Act 1992, smoking is prohibited in the educational institutions, omnibuses, private buses, private hire buses, school buses and taxis. 

From 1 October 2017, smokers can no longer light up at the following premises and public service vehicles listed below:

a)            Autonomous Universities’ compounds

b)            Private education institutions (PEIs)

c)            Within five metres of educational institutions, including kindergartens, child care centres, special education schools, madrasahs, primary schools, secondary schools, junior colleges/centralised institute, polytechnics, the Institute of Technical Education campuses, PEIs and autonomous universities.

d)            Private-hire cars on paid chauffeured service

e)            Trishaws

f)             Excursion buses

The management of universities and private education institutions offering degree courses have the option to set up designated smoking areas (DSAs) to allow smoking at certain places within the premises and premises owners will be responsible for the maintenance of the DSAs.
