Latest Weather And Haze Situation

Dry conditions persisted over the southern ASEAN region today, apart from the western parts of Sumatra, the southern parts of Peninsular Malaysia and the northern and eastern parts of Kalimantan where there were some showers. Scattered hotspots were detected in Kalimantan and Sumatra, while few hotspots were detected in Peninsular Malaysia. Moderate to dense smoke haze was observed over parts of Kalimantan and the central and southern parts of Sumatra. Air quality stations in Kalimantan and the southern and central parts of Sumatra reported Unhealthy to Very Unhealthy levels. The overall hotspot and smoke haze situation over the southern ASEAN region could not be fully determined due to cloud cover. Showers were observed over the northern ASEAN region and the hotspot activity remained low.

Weather And Haze Outlook

Over the next few days, dry weather is expected to persist over parts of the southern ASEAN region, except over Peninsular Malaysia, the northern and central parts of Sumatra and parts of Borneo where showers are forecast. While showers may bring some relief to the hotspot and smoke haze situation, there remains a risk of transboundary haze occurrence especially over areas experiencing prolonged dry conditions. The prevailing winds over the southern ASEAN region are likely to blow generally from the east to southwest. The northern ASEAN region is expected to stay wet, which should keep the hotspot and smoke haze situation subdued. The prevailing winds over the northern ASEAN region are forecast to be variable in direction.
