Noise Pollution

Vehicular Noise Control

NEA sets the exhaust noise emission standards for new and in-use vehicles. New and used vehicles imported into Singapore shall meet the exhaust noise emission standards prescribed in the regulations before they can be registered for use in Singapore (see link for more information). In-use vehicles are also required to comply with the exhaust noise emission standards prescribed in the regulations (see link for more information). Excessive noise emission is mainly due to modifications carried out to the vehicle’s exhaust, overloading and/or speeding on the road. LTA regulates vehicular modifications and overloading of vehicles, TP enforces speeding on the road. In-use vehicles that do not meet the prescribed noise standards during the mandatory periodic inspections at authorised inspection centres will not have their road tax renewed and cannot be used on the road.

LTA, TP and NEA conduct regular joint enforcement ops against modified vehicles/overloaded/speeding/noisy local and foreign vehicles. The modified and noisy foreign vehicles are also reported to the Malaysian authorities for their follow-up action.
