Why is NEA conducting wastewater surveillance in my neighbourhood? Should I be concerned?
NEA conducts wastewater surveillance across Singapore to track community disease trends for early warning and situational awareness. The presence of equipment in your neighbourhood does not necessarily indicate increased disease transmission in the area.
Which areas of Singapore are covered by this programme?
The surveillance network covers all residential areas through over 500 sampling sites located across Singapore's sewage system. Deployment sites are subject to change based on surveillance needs.
What privacy safeguards are in place?
As wastewater samples are aggregated over the catchment area, the derived data cannot be traced to individuals or households. The programme does not analyse or store human genetic data.
Equipment and Installations
What is the equipment I see in my neighbourhood?
We deploy wastewater autosamplers that collect sewage samples from manholes for laboratory analysis. To ensure public safety and equipment security, autosamplers are deployed within a housing, with some long-term deployment sites also featuring protective hoarding structures. How long will the equipment remain in my area?
Equipment deployment duration varies based on surveillance needs and site characteristics. Is the equipment safe?
Yes, all equipment installations and sampling activities follow strict safety protocols. The autosamplers are designed for safe operation and are inspected and maintained regularly.
Safety barriers, housing, and hoarding provide additional protection for both the public and the equipment.
