Caring for Our Environment as A Way of Life
The Clean and Green Singapore (CGS) Carnival 2019, was launched on 2 November in Jurong East (at the open field next to Westgate), and was open to public from 2 to 4 November. In line with the carnival’s theme, ‘Caring for our Environment Together’, the event brought together 11 government agencies and more than 20 non-governmental organisations, community partners and schools, to showcase their achievements, and promote an environmentally-friendly lifestyle. A wide range of workshops, games and exhibits were available for visitors to learn how everyone can play a part in keeping Singapore clean, green, and sustainable, and support our national efforts Towards Zero Waste.
With the theme of ‘Caring for Our Environment Together’, this year’s Carnival has an array of interactive displays to highlight the importance of taking action today to reduce our carbon footprint for a sustainable future.

To kick off the CGS Carnival, Guest-of-Honour, Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean, together with Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for National Development and Second Minister for Finance, Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Senior Minister of State, Dr Amy Khor, Ms Low Yen Ling, Mayor of South West District, Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West District, Dr Mohamad Maliki, Mayor of South East District and Ms Cheng Li Hui, Vice-chairman of North East CDC, planted small-leaved nutmeg trees near the event site. The trees were chosen by NParks to commemorate our bicentennial celebrations this year, as nutmegs were an important local economic crop in Singapore’s past.

The carnival also saw the launch of the renewed sustainability masterplan for the South West District, Sustainable South West (SSW). The SSW provides a blueprint for the community and corporate stakeholders to nurture an even more sustainable, caring and liveable South West District into the next decade.
Mayor Ms Low Yen Ling shared how the SSW was developed in close consultation with South West residents, and encapsulates their shared aspirations, aims and intent for the future sustainability of the South West community.

Senior Minister Mr Teo Chee Hean highlighted how Singapore has always sought to balance economic development with environmental protection, in order to create the Clean and Green environment that we live in today. He also shared that as a small city-state with no natural resources, we need to continue to put sustainability at the centre of everything we do, especially as climate change will affect our living environment, potentially disrupt our access to essential food, water and energy sources, and leave us vulnerable to rising sea levels. He encouraged all Singaporeans to play their part by adopting more sustainable lifestyles, and support efforts Towards Zero Waste, by reducing the unnecessary use of disposable bags or bottles; conserving precious water; using energy efficient appliances; and Recycling Right.

Senior Minister Mr Teo Chee Hean also presented nine CGS Awards to grassroots organisations, in recognition of their efforts in engaging their residents to do more in the areas of public health, cleanliness, waste reduction, resource conservation and energy efficiency. Six new Community in Bloom (CIB) Ambassador Awards, were also presented to individuals for their outstanding efforts in fostering a love for gardening among members of their communities.

Key Event Highlights and Eco School Day
CGS Pre-event Learning Journeys
This year, a series of learning journeys were designed for the public, aimed at educating, encouraging and inspiring participants to appreciate the importance of Singapore’s zero waste goals. Participants took part in hands-on activities to learn more about reducing disposables, recycling and reducing food waste, and enjoyed a rare opportunity to visit various sites in Singapore involved in processing the waste we generate every day.
About 400 members of the public from grassroots organisations and schools across Singapore participated in the learning journeys, which took them to Semakau Landfill, SembWaste Materials Recovery Facility, Tzu-Chi Eco-Awareness Center, Our Tampines Hub and Kampung Kampus.

CGS Main Carnival
At the carnival, visitors picked up easy-to-adopt tips on how to lead a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle, through 17 interactive carnival games — the most on show at any CGS carnival — as well as eco workshops. Community and corporate partners presented their sustainability efforts, and sustainable products and services in the exhibition booths and at the Eco Fair section. The carnival also featured performances, skits and stage games, Reverse Vending Machines, and a community recycling drive.

At South West District Showcase, visitors were introduced to the Sustainable South West (SSW) masterplan, the many different programmes available, as well as how the residents can be involved in the South West district’s environmental efforts.

At Makers Corner, visitors were engaged in hands-on demonstrations of how unwanted items and waste can be upcycled into useful products. Representatives from Repair Kopitiam were also on hand to teach visitors simple techniques to repair old or faulty household electrical appliances.

In addition to the main carnival held at the field, student volunteers from more than 10 environmentally active South West district schools conducted a series of workshops within Westgate shopping mall itself. The students actively engaged visitors and demonstrated how to turn waste into arts and crafts. In addition, workshops conducted by the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, Wildlife Reserves Singapore and Zero Waste SG, helped visitors understand more about the impact humans have on the environment.

The Eco School section of the carnival showcased the environmental efforts and special projects of students and teachers from award-winning schools. They included 2019 ASEAN Eco-schools Bukit View Secondary School and Marsiling Primary School, President’s Award for the Environment 2019 recipient Mee Toh School, Ecofriend 2019 teachers from Woodgrove and Commonwealth Secondary Schools, and Say Yes To Waste Less champion Nanyang Girls' High School. More than 1,000 students and teachers, from pre-schools to secondary schools visited the carnival on 4 November.

Held every year, the Clean & Green Singapore Carnival aims to inspire Singaporeans to care for and protect the environment by adopting a clean, green and sustainable lifestyle.
