We refer to Ms Shen’s letter, “Increase number of rubbish bins to improve littering situation” (6 Dec).
Everyone must take collective responsibility to bin their litter properly. NEA has strategically placed more than 11,000 litter bins at public areas throughout Singapore, particularly at high human traffic areas, such as bus stops and busy pavements. We may move or deploy more bins as needed, based on ground assessment and public feedback, as there must be a balance between convenience for the public and resources needed to empty the thousands of bins. We encourage members of the public to hold on to their litter if there are no bins nearby.
By using bins properly and not littering, we are showing consideration to our cleaners. Unfortunately, some people remain irresponsible and litter, thus NEA has been taking a firm stance against such litterbugs. From 2020 to 2022, NEA issued an average of 17,200 tickets annually for littering.
NEA’s enforcement and cleaning efforts are supported by close collaboration with our stakeholders for education, outreach, and ground-up action. Our many partners conduct activities, such as litter-picking brisk walks, beach and park clean-up exercises, and appreciation days for cleaners. We will continue to engage the community to foster collective action and social responsibility towards keeping our environment clean.
