Stepping Up to Keep Our Beaches Clean, Together
The National Environment Agency (NEA) thanks Mr Ng Jou Min for his letter, “A corner of the city” (15 Aug), and for highlighting the volunteer's cleaning efforts along East Coast Park Beach.
During the monsoon season, our beaches typically see higher amounts of flotsam, as strong winds and high tides carry debris from marine sources onto our shores.
Beaches along Singapore's southern coast, including East Coast Park Beach, typically experience higher flotsam volumes during the Southwest monsoon months of June to September, while those along the northern coast tend to see more flotsam during the Northeast monsoon months of December to March. NEA monitors our beaches closely throughout the year and adjusts cleaning operations around these seasonal patterns.
NEA has stepped up beach cleaning operations from four times a week, to twice daily each year during the monsoon months. This year, the intensified cleaning has been in place since May 2026. While each high tide will continue to bring in new debris, NEA will continue to monitor the situation and adjust our cleaning operations as needed.
We share Mr Ng's appreciation for the volunteer's efforts and invite members of the public to join us in caring for our beaches. Together, we can keep Singapore's beaches clean and enjoyable for all.
