Singapore, 12 November 2019 – A moving services director was fined $9,000 on 7 November 2019 for the illegal dumping of more than 20 pieces of bulky furniture along Jalan Terusan.

National Environment Agency (NEA) officers detected the illegally dumped furniture during routine surveillance and traced it to the director. Investigations revealed that the man had provided moving services on 30 September 2018 to a customer. He subsequently dumped the unwanted furniture along Jalan Terusan to save on disposal fees. The furniture should have been sent to second-hand dealers or recyclers. His action constituted an illegal dumping offence.

He was charged under section 20(1) of the Environmental Public Health Act, Cap 95 for dumping waste from a vehicle in a public place. The maximum fine for the offence is $50,000, imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months, or both. Repeat offenders are liable to a maximum fine of $100,000, imprisonment for a term of not less than one month but not more than 12 months, or both.

Illegal dumping of waste in a public place is a serious offence as it causes pollution and public health hazards. NEA takes a serious view of illegal dumping and will not hesitate to take strict enforcement action against anyone found to be in violation of the Environmental Public Health Act, Cap 95.

With continued enforcement and close surveillance by NEA, the number of illegal dumping cases has dropped from 160 in 2000 to 53 in 2018.The public can help by calling NEA's Call Centre at 1800-CALL NEA (1800-2255-632) should they witness any illegal dumping activity.

When reporting, it would be helpful to furnish the date, time and location of the incident, as well as the registration number of the vehicle used to carry the waste. Photos and videos that can provide leads for NEA to investigate are also welcome.
