Ash Soil Transfer Works To Be Conducted At NEA’s Inland Ash Scattering Facility - Garden Of Peace

Singapore, 5 June 2024 – The National Environment Agency (NEA) opened the first Inland Ash Scattering (IAS) facility at the Garden of Peace (GOP) at Choa Chu Kang Cemetery in May 2021, providing more options to the public for the management of the cremated ashes of their loved ones. After cremated ashes are turned into fine ashes in powder form, the fine ashes can be scattered at the lanes within the Garden of Peace.

2          Since its introduction, there has been increasing demand for IAS. The number of applications rose from about 900 in 2021 to about 2,000 in 2023. Over time, the fine ashes accumulate in the scattering lanes, which have a limited capacity.

3          From June 2024, NEA will commence ash soil transfer works at the Garden of Peace. Ash soil from the four lanes will be transferred away from the scattering lanes and to a designated site within the Garden of Peace, so that the lanes can be used once again by other members of the public and for many years into the future. (Please refer to the map in the Annex A.)

4          As the works at the lanes will be taking place in phases, affected lanes will be closed. Meanwhile, members of the public can continue to access and use other lanes. For public safety, visitors are reminded to keep out of the closed off areas. NEA will announce details of maintenance works on https://go.gov.sg/inland-ash-scattering.

5          Before the Garden of Peace was opened to the public, NEA engaged religious groups, the funeral industry and other stakeholder groups when conceptualising the IAS process including ash soil transfer. A second IAS facility, the Garden of Serenity, is being constructed together with the new Mandai Crematorium Complex. This will make IAS more accessible when it is opened in 2025.

6          For enquiries on IAS at the Garden of Peace, the public may contact NEA Choa Chu Kang Cemetery office at 6795 9731, from 8:30am to 4:30pm (Mondays to Fridays).
