Officially established on 25th April 2002, the Environmental Health Institute (EHI) is a public health laboratory at the National Environment Agency (NEA) that conducts research, surveillance and evidence-based risk assessment on infectious diseases of environmental concern. The key thrust of the institute is to acquire knowledge and to develop advanced and cost-effective tools and strategies to support public health operations and policies.
EHI's work falls under three multi-disciplinary programmes:
i) Surveillance and Epidemiology; ii) Vector-Borne Disease Research (e.g. dengue, chikungunya, malaria and hantavirus infections); and iii) Food and Environmental Hygiene Research (e.g. indoor air quality, Legionella contamination and fungus infestation)
Through the surveillance and study of disease vectors, viruses and hosts, as well as food pathogens and environmental factors, an amalgamated approach is taken to pursue new knowledge and technologies relevant to environmental public health.
EHI’s team of highly motivated researchers comprises entomologists, microbiologists, molecular biologists, immunologists, statisticians, etc. The institute collaborates with various academic bodies, research institutes and organisations, and is constantly identifying working partners with relevant expertise. Working with other stakeholders, EHI strives to contribute to the continuous advancement of Singapore's public health.
