Starter Culture was founded by a group of students doing their post-graduate studies  who seek to demystify the techniques of fermentation as well as share the rich tradition of fermented food and generate interest and appreciation in the preparation of artisanal food. Founder, Mr Tan Ding Jie, carried out their first food fermentation workshop under the Vibrant Hawker Centres programme at Tiong Bahru Market in 2018 to test out the public’s receptiveness to a fermentation workshop to raise awareness on food science.  The inaugural workshop received overwhelming support from patrons of the hawker centre as well as the public. They have since carried out many fully-subscribed workshops at hawker centres sharing their knowledge on food fermentation methods to make food items like achar, kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, rice wine and more!
