JOINT NEWS RELEASE BETWEEN PUB, SFA AND NEA

Singapore, 22 September 2020
– A total of 20 candidates received the Singapore Sustainability Scholarship (SSS) from Minister for Sustainability and the Environment (MSE), Ms Grace Fu, at the virtual scholarship award ceremony this morning (refer to Annex A for photos of the ceremony). The SSS is jointly offered by the National Environment Agency (NEA), national water agency, PUB, and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA).

2          The SSS seeks to groom and nurture young talent who are keen to develop a career that aims to strengthen Singapore’s environmental resilience and food and water security. Each year, the scholarship identifies potential game-changers with the foresight to anticipate future challenges and develop solutions for climate change, energy efficiency, the nation’s water resources and food security. The scholars will pursue majors in the engineering, environmental, food and science-related disciplines in either a local or overseas university. After graduating, the scholars will begin their career with either NEA, PUB or SFA and embark on a fulfilling career while playing their part in Singapore’s sustainability story. Since inception of the scholarship in 2008, a total of 191 scholarships have been handed out.

3          Charis Chia Song Ying, 19, is one of the recipients of the SSS from NEA this year. Having studied Chemistry at National University of Singapore (NUS) High School of Math and Science, Charis wanted to learn more about how her knowledge in Chemistry can be applied to real-life situations. It was her curiosity and interest in applying science and technological solutions to problem-resolution that prompted her to pick up a Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering at the NUS. Charis shared, “The work in NEA is intriguing and meaningful, as all the efforts towards safeguarding Singapore's environment are made with the goal of ensuring that everyone has a sustainable and safe home to live in. I hope to continue to learn and pick up new skills to make a meaningful contribution in my future career with NEA.”(Refer to Annex B for information on all the scholarship recipients).

4          Mr Tan Meng Dui, Chief Executive Officer of NEA said, “NEA is excited to offer the scholarships to these young, talented individuals. They are the future of a clean, green and sustainable Singapore. Under the Singapore Sustainability Scholarship, we do not just look for hard working youths, but also for outstanding individuals who are passionate in sustainable development and who are committed to care for and protect the environment. Congratulations to our newest batch of scholarship recipients! We look forward to having them join us at NEA to embark on a purposeful career.”

5          Doris Qian Zichen, 19, who will be pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at Columbia University, USA, is one of the scholarship recipients from PUB. With a keen interest in water issues since young, Zichen chose Electrical Engineering as it is a flexible and foundational discipline, which would allow her to contribute to the infrastructure and technological systems of PUB. She shares, “Having been interested in Singapore's water management since my primary school field trip to the NEWater Visitor Centre, I aspire to give back to society with my skills and passion in technology. My internship with PUB’s Jurong Water Reclamation Plant provided valuable insights on the importance of water reuse and how we can reclaim every drop of water, ensuring a sustainable supply of water for Singapore. I am grateful that this scholarship will allow me to play a part in Singapore’s water future.”

6          “Ensuring water resilience and sustainability is critical to Singapore’s survival and economic prosperity and a never-ending task. With climate change, it is even more important that we take proactive steps to protect our water resources. We are pleased to welcome our Singapore Sustainability Scholarship recipients who will join us in PUB’s mission of supplying good water, reclaiming used water and taming stormwater. Together we will work on securing Singapore’s water future”, said Mr Ng Joo Hee, Chief Executive, PUB.

7        For Lim Shi Yue Phoebe, 19, who has been awarded a scholarship to pursue Computational Biology in NUS this year, she looks forward to using the knowledge acquired from her future studies to contribute to Singapore’s food security. “The interdisciplinary intersection between computing and life sciences looks at how computational methods and mathematical approaches work hand in hand to give rise to innovative food solutions. I look forward to a meaningful career that contributes towards SFA’s mission to ensure and secure a supply of safe food for Singapore, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic where we saw the impact of supply disruptions on a country’s food supply.”

8        Mr Lim Kok Thai, Chief Executive Officer of SFA, said, “The Singapore Sustainability Scholarship is a great avenue for grooming future talent with a wide-range of skills and expertise who are keen to take on our food challenges and turn these into strategic advantages. We are pleased to welcome our SSS Scholarship recipients as we work together towards growing our local agri-food industry and strengthening Singapore’s food supply resilience.”

9        This year, the scholarship, which was formerly known as the National Environment and Water (NEW) scholarship, has been renamed the Singapore Sustainability Scholarship to be in line with the renaming of MSE. Under the SSS, NEA and PUB offer both undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships, while SFA offers undergraduate scholarships. Both undergraduates and fresh graduates are given the opportunity to pursue a Mid-Term and Masters scholarship.

10      NEA focuses on environmental-related domains such as Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, as well as Sciences such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Sciences and Meteorology, amongst others. PUB focuses on students pursuing engineering disciplines, mainly in Civil, Electrical, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering. SFA focuses on Sciences such as Agricultural Sciences, Aquaculture, Chemistry, Food Science and Life Sciences.

1

Chia Song Ying, Charis
19

Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering

National University of Singapore

Having pursued chemistry in high school, Charis wanted to learn more about how her knowledge in Chemistry can be applied to real-life situations. She believes that knowledge in science without application will not be meaningful. It was her curiosity and interest in applying science and technological solutions to problem-resolution that prompted her to study chemical engineering in the university.

Charis applied for the SSS scholarship via the internship selection route where her project focused on the study of radon gas levels in different parts of Singapore, both indoors and outdoors. It was a humbling experience for her, as she never imagined that a simple word ‘radon’ could spark off ideas and discussions – its impact to one’s health, the mechanisms behind its measurements, and the extent to which air conditioning systems could cause its accumulation. The internship opportunity made her realise the importance of continuous learning, especially beyond one's scope of expertise.

She feels the work in NEA intriguing and meaningful, as all the efforts towards safeguarding Singapore's environment are made with the goal of ensuring that everyone has a sustainable and safe home to live in. She seeks to continue to learn and pick up new skills to make a meaningful contribution in her career in NEA.

Bachelor of Science in Environmental Earth Systems Science and Public Policy and Global Affairs

Nanyang Technological University of Singapore

As environmental sustainability becomes a prominent issue in the world, Celine feels that making environmental changes to her own lifestyle is akin to working in silos which may not make a significant resolution to a global issue that requires a collective effort.

Pursuing an environmental-related course in the university was thus a natural choice for her.She observes that most people may be inclined to adopt environmental solutions that are convenient and intuitive. With a deeper understanding of environmental issues and how they uniquely affect Singapore, she hopes that her degree will put her in good stead to equip her with the knowledge and skills to tackle the environmental issues that the community and society faces, and she aspires to design sound policies in the long-run to help improve and sustain the liveability of the country.
