Public Sector Taking the Lead in Environmental Sustainability

PartnershipPublic agencies in Singapore often come together to coordinate operations, share expertise and resources, and collaborate in inter-agency committees and task forces. To harness this synergy, NEA forms strategic partnerships with fellow public agencies, and plays an integral role in WOG programmes to drive sustainability across the public sector.

Exceeding Key Sustainability Targets

NEA is proud to have exceeded key targets set in the Public Sector Taking the Lead in Environmental Sustainability (PSTLES) initiative. Implemented to encourage the public sector to lead by example, the initiative sets sustainability targets, which include reducing 15 per cent of FY2013 electricity consumption by FY2020, reducing the water efficiency index by five per cent, and achieving Green Mark GoldPLUS and Gold for large and mid-sized premises. Moving forward, NEA is developing the programmes and measures for the next phase of the PSTLES initiative, known as GreenGov.SG, which was launched on 12 July 2021 and spans from FY2021 to FY2030.

Detecting Irregularities in Niches

In April 2019, NEA participated in the Infocomm Media Development Authority’s third Open Innovation Platform Innovation Call, a crowdsourcing initiative that connects and matches challenges of problem owners to a pool of problem solvers including start-ups, companies and researchers.

One of the projects, 'Automated Inspection and Detection of Irregularities in Niches', to improve the operational efficiency and service delivery at public columbaria, was awarded to Senserbot Pte Ltd. Senserbot developed a successful working prototype and has been awarded the next phase of the project, which is a pilot trial.

Supporting The Switch to Climate-Friendly Water-Cooled Chillers

On 8 October 2020, NEA together with the Economic Development Board and the Building and Construction Authority launched a new grant to support and encourage companies to switch to climate-friendly water-cooled chillers. In addition, the Institute of Technical Education launched a training course in end 2020 for household air-conditioner technicians to equip them with knowledge and skills in handling refrigerant during installation and maintenance of residential air-conditioning systems, such as charging and pump-down. Since the launch of the course, about 70 technicians have been trained.

Stakeholder Engagement Highlight

Hawker Food
  • In June 2020, NEA, in collaboration with Enterprise Singapore, Infocomm Media Development Authority, Housing Development Board (HDB) and Jurong Town Corporation (JTC), accelerated the roll-out of the unified e-payment solution nationwide at NEA hawker centres, HDB coffee shops and JTC industrial canteens under the Hawkers Go Digital programme. Digital Ambassadors from the Singapore Digital Office reached out to all 114 hawkers centres to encourage stallholders to adopt the e-payment solution. The Government would be covering the onboarding fees and transaction fees, such as merchant discount rate payable by merchants, until 31 December 2023.
