do was to experiment and work out a compost system suited for Singapore’s climate and living conditions. I used broken pails and old pots that my mum wanted to throw out and made them into various composting systems. Some worked, and some did not, and I definitely had my fair share of stinky bins and unhappy parents. Thankfully, none of my neighbours made a fuss, and I am very grateful for that! That being said, after 3 years of twinking around, I have finally landed on a system that works and I just want to teach and inspire everyone and anyone to start composting at home! I want to let them know that it is possible, and pretty easy once you understand the fundamental basics of how composting works. I like to think that I have done all the hard work so that I can make it easier for others to compost at home.
What are your Foodscape dreams for Singapore?
HJ I really hope that our Collective will be able to empower and inspire residents in Singapore to care about where their food waste goes to. I really think that composting is the way to go and we can utilise what we usually discard and turn it into a resource, black gold! Following this, my bigger dream is that we can one day use this black gold to grow edible plants all around Singapore. Imagine smelling a whiff of basil and mint when you walk around your neighbourhood! That would be very lovely indeed.
What is one advice you would give to anyone who wants to do better for the Earth?
HJ Every little bit counts! I know it can feel overwhelming when you see the massive destruction that is happening to our planet, it can also feel like your efforts are futile, but
I grew to appreciate
the park and how we were blessed with abundant leaves that could be readily used to make compost.
trust me, you can harness more power than you think you do. A small action might not look like it amounts to much, but our actions can influence the people around us and you never know when your action will spark someone to create a solution or inspire a person in power to push for policies that protect our Earth and future. Tread with compassion and live with kindness, we can do great things for our environment!
