Yio Chu Kang Clean and Green Taskforce
Led by Mr David Lee, the Yio Chu Kang Clean and Green Taskforce has grown in strength since its formation in October 2016. Making up a group of 30 volunteers, the group organises litter-picking activities, dengue prevention house visits, recycling drives and even their own carnival, "Clean & Green @ Yio Chu Kang, Be Part of Us", which saw a participation rate of close to 1000 residents.
A manager in the financial sector, Mr Lee only started actively volunteering for the environment 2 years ago. He encountered many talks and reports about caring for the environment and was inspired to do more for his community. Reading Central Singapore Community Development Council’s newsletters on clean and green-related activities was another motivating factor.
The taskforce volunteers cite the residents’ positive reactions and growing interest in environment protection as huge motivating factors to continue the work they do. They envision a Singapore where citizens are more conscious about keeping community spaces clean, practise water
energy saving tips and integrate the 3Rs as part of their lifestyle.
Their hard work and active volunteerism was recognised in 2019 at the main launch of the annual Clean and Green Singapore Carnival where they received the Best Constituency – Commendation Award from Guest of Honour, Mr Teo Chee Hean. This award is given to constituencies that have shown commendable efforts in achieving a high level of participation and programme quality in achieving successful environmental, public hygiene and cleanliness outcomes with strong support and commitment from its community.
Project EARTH at Kolam Ayer
For the last 9 years, Residents’ Committees (RC) at Kolam Ayer Division have been conducting regular recycling drives at void decks and at HDB pavilions. Helmed by their respective RC chairpersons and assisted by over 60 volunteers, they receive an average of more than 10,000kg of recyclables monthly. At the Kolam Ayer Sims Vista RC, Ms Foo Jee Buay, BBM, leads a group of 10 volunteers to conduct recycling drives every 2 months.
