Singapore’s clean and highly liveable environment has been achieved through the concerted and sustained
efforts across the people, private and government sectors. At the Central District, passionate volunteers are at the heart of their environmental outreach programmes such as Project EARTH, EcoKnight SG and Do the Mozzie Wipeout.
Madam Lily Han
Madam Lily Han’s passion for recycling and upcycling started when her children were schooling, about 15 years ago. She initially shared her passion by conducting classes in schools to teach children how to make mini owerpots by reusing empty drink containers. Over the years, this broadened into teaching the public various upcycling crafts at grassroots and national events.
At Kolam Ayer Whampoa South, Madam Han organises weekly environment-themed activities for residents and facilitates recycling drives on a regular basis. As a keen advocate of recycling, she has managed to rally an increasing number of residents to participate in recycling drives over the years. Together with 15 other volunteers, her recycling drives collect approximately 5,000kg of recyclables each time.
