also provides habitats for fishes, birds and dragonflies.
Encompassing two main lakes — Dragonfly Lake and Kingfisher Lake
— a system was engineered to act as
an extension of the Marina Reservoir. Water run-off from within the Gardens is captured by the lake system and filtered by aquatic plants, before it is discharged into the reservoir. This naturally treated water from the lake system is used to irrigate the outdoor gardens.
Habitats for fishes and dragonflies are also created within the lake system
by maintaining a diversity of aquatic plants, good water circulation and aeration. This keeps potential problems such as mosquito breeding in check.
Providing Ecosystem Services
Great emphasis is placed on looking after the Gardens’ ecological landscapes. Our passionate staff ensure the landscapes and systems perform well in the areas of clean air and water, filtering of pollution and decomposition of waste. In turn, natural processes allow

for a self-sustaining garden, reducing the resources required for maintenance.
Gardens by the Bay has also become a provider of “ecosystem services”, from which humans reap benefits. These include regulating services such as the prevention of soil erosion, and cultural services, including the provision of spaces for recreation. As the saying goes: “As we nourish the Earth, so it nourishes us.”
Connecting People with Nature
Gardens by the Bay nurtures an appreciation of nature among visitors of all ages. By drawing crowds through stunning architectural structures, beautiful horticultural displays, dazzling light and sound shows, and a wide range of events and festivals, the work of connecting people to nature begins.
An array of family-friendly, enrichment and education programmes, as well
as guided tours, are available to
meet the needs of our visitors, as we continually introduce new programmes and refresh our exhibits and displays. Sustainability-themed activities,
such as Race to Sustainability, are organised to introduce the wonders of nature and engineering to our urbanised youths.
Our World of Gardens for All to Own, Enjoy and Cherish
As Gardens by the Bay develops more community spaces, events and programmes for Singaporeans
and visitors, there will be more opportunities to connect

enjoy and cherish.
