Moving Forward
In the face of the existential threat of sea level rising, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong issued a grave warning during his 2019 National Day Rally, "... climate change defences are existential for Singapore...". On 23 September 2019, at the Climate Action Summit 2019, PM Lee Hsien Loong said: "...Singapore will not be able to stop climate change on our own. Therefore, we are cooperating with other countries on this common endeavour. We launched the Climate Action Package to offer capacity building programmes...".
At the 2019 Singapore International Energy Week, Minister for Trade and Industry Mr Chan Chun Sing shared the Singapore's Energy Story for the next 50 years with solar energy as one of the "four switches" to build a sustainable, reliable and affordable energy supply system, alongside natural gas, regional power grids and emerging low-carbon alternatives. More solar energy systems will help Singapore to meet its international commitments to combat climate change by slowing down and ultimately capping GHG emissions.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation, around one- third of the global food supply is wasted annually. The Food Loss and Waste
(FLW) leads to environmental issues such as GHG emissions, with FLW only behind China and the USA in terms of GHG contribution if it were to be ranked as a country. Globally, a huge amount of waste is generated – whether from excessive packaging, food waste, or electronic waste. These all have to be disposed of, and often incinerated, which then generates more GHG.
For 2020, the current CAP training programmes of 2019 will be repackaged, to include (i) an additional training programme on sustainable waste management and smart urbanisation: "Sustainable Waste Management and Smart Urbanisation in the era of Climate Change"; and (ii) in collaboration with problem- solvers, innovators, scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and communities to showcase their e orts and creative solutions in building defences against climate change such as the use of solar energy as one of the "four switches", community-based collective e orts towards a more sustainable and zero- waste living, transforming waste to building resources and paving the way for a sustainable food industry with focus towards achieving zero waste through upcycling based on circular economy principles.
