This is to ascertain that these sites are secured against the theft of radioactive materials. Together, the two agencies performed the first round of inspections at 67 storage sites. NEA is the national authority responsible for meeting the obligations set out in the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material. This includes tracking the movement of nuclear material in transit through Singapore. Strengthening security around radioactive materials Discharging our responsibility under the Convention on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material To better discharge this responsibility, Singapore has implemented a licensing regime to track maritime vessels carrying nuclear material while in transit through Singapore’s seaports, as well as a notification system to share relevant information with security and response agencies. storage sites 67 Two agencies performed the first round of inspections at 56 In the year, NEA vigorously pursued new solutions to environmental challenges. Through funding programmes, NEA also spurred corporations to leverage technology and innovation in their management of environmental issues. Finding new solutions and funding new innovations On 1 April 2014, NEA introduced a $10 million Quieter Construction Fund to support construction companies that use quieter machines, noise control equipment and other innovative noise reduction solutions. The fund reimburses up to 50% of the cost of acquiring or developing these solutions. The fund was well-received by the industry and applications quickly streamed in. As of 1 March 2016, 41 applications have received NEA’s in-principle approval for an estimated total sum of $1,368,000. About half of the applications were for the installation of perimeter noise barriers, which reduce noise levels by at least 10 A-weighted decibels (dBA). Applications were also filed for innovative solutions such as the use of crack inducers to remove pile head caps, in Quieter Construction Fund place of the conventional excavator breaker; a noise reduction of more than 30 dBA can be achieved using this method. The encouraging take-up rate of the Quieter Construction Fund has resulted in its extension for two more years to 31 March 2018 to allow more companies to attain higher standards in managing construction noise. In addition, the funding cap was increased to persuade more contractors to co-invest in quieter construction technologies. The revision was made following consultation with the Singapore Construction Association Ltd and other government agencies as well as through feedback from applicants.
