Located across the island, they present the best in local food and serve to bring the community together. With eating out at hawker centres being a big part of many Singaporeans’ lives, it is vital to ensure that food sold at our hawker centres are of a high hygiene standard. NEA currently manages and regulates 107 markets and hawker centres in Singapore. Our role includes New and improved: Our hawker centres the management of tenancies, licences and the public health aspects of the centres. Since 2012, the government has started building new hawker centres and aims to complete the development of 20 new hawker centres by 2027. In the last financial year, NEA also renovated and commenced work to replace several hawker centres. This concerted push means that the public can look forward to dining out at many hawker centres with exciting updated features. new hawker centres by 2027 20 HONG LIM MARKET & FOOD CENTRE Of the 20 new hawker centres slated to be built, Hougang Ci Yuan Hawker Centre and Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre were the first two to be launched. Both were completed in 2015. Officially opened on 20 September 2015, Ci Yuan Hawker Centre is a first in many ways. It is the first hawker centre in Singapore to be located within a community club, the fruit of a joint initiative by the People’s Association (PA), the Ministry of Health (MOH) and NEA. The centre has opened its doors to aspiring hawkers who are new to the trade under its entrepreneurship programme. It is also the first hawker centre to introduce self-payment kiosks at all its stalls. NEA implemented a number of innovative processes and solutions. They include the provision of centralised dishwashing facility, and family-friendly amenities such as family rooms with nursing and diaper changing facilities and child-friendly seats and washbasins. These features herald a new era in hawker centres. New hawker centres Hougang Ci Yuan Hawker Centre – the first hawker centre inside a community club The hawker centre boosts 40 food stalls and can seat up to 640 people. It operates 24 hours. NEA appointed Fei Siong Social Enterprise Pte Ltd as the managing agent and master tenant for the centre. In turn, NEA oversees the management agent’s performance and facilitates feedback on how the centre is managed.
