At the carnival, NEA staged a Hawker Fest showcasing 10 popular hawkers. These outstanding hawkers selling Chinese, Malay and Indian dishes were handpicked by NEA from hawker centres across the island. Visitors enjoyed learning about the development of hawker centres through exhibits while relishing the taste of their favourite hawker fare. 20 At the five Clean & Green SG50 carnivals, the Singapore Environment Story exhibition took visitors back in time to relieve moments where Singapore started its environmental journey. Through a mix of photographs, personal stories and video interviews, visitors saw Singapore’s transformation over the past five decades from a developing nation with poor public hygiene standards and polluted rivers to a city that is among the cleanest and most liveable in Asia. The exhibition also included a collection of more than 5,000 stories gathered through the Singapore Environment Story initiative that not only celebrated the nation’s environmental achievements over the past 50 years but also showcased citizens’ aspirations for Singapore’s future environment. The contributions can be viewed online at www.cgs.sg. This Award was organised in collaboration with Marshall Cavendish Education to celebrate Clean and Green SG50 PM Lee views the Singapore Environment Story exhibition which mapped Singapore’s milestone in environmental achievements and our hopes for the future Fifty years ago, our pioneers lived in very basic living conditions; waterways were polluted; the streets were filled with litter; the rivers were full of even worse things. But right from the beginning, our leaders — Mr Lee Kuan Yew and his colleagues — very much had clean and green and making this a better place to live in on their minds. Today, we can be proud that we have built a beautiful and endearing home for ourselves, including a ‘City in a Garden’ with many green spaces and waterways that many of us can enjoy, including the Punggol Waterway Park.
