YED was aligned to Earth Day, an annual international environmental event which falls on 22 April. The theme for the year was Imagine. Create. Change. Two events were organised in celebration of YED. Talk Gong Night held on 20 March at NUS University Town employed games and activities to showcase the usefulness of reusable containers. The event was staged by a team of youths from various tertiary institutions and junior colleges. At the event, leaders of NUS Students Against Violation of the Earth, Earthlink NTU, SMU’s Verts, and SUTD’s Greenprint signed an inaugural declaration of environmental cooperation. YED 2015 @ ITE College Central was held on 16 April. At the event, students from 50 schools had fun personalising Captain Green figurines to embody their Youth for the Environment Day interpretation of the theme and their commitment to the environment. The students also enjoyed the introductory workshop on Design Thinking, where they learnt ways to develop innovative solutions to environmental challenges. To mark the occasion, ITE gave the campus cleaners a day off, conducted an Eco-trail tour on campus for students, and organised clean-up activities in the neighbourhood so that its students would better appreciate the importance of a clean environment and gain a sense of ownership of the environment. Two ideas were eventually implemented. The first was to display recycling posters at void decks to remind residents to recycle, as well as signages pointing the way to the nearest recycling bin. The second was to produce a Household Recycling Starter Kit that contains Co-creating recycling ideas with the community One resident shared that he recycles at home by hanging a plastic bag from an ‘S’ hook and filling the bag with recyclables Data collection by NEA officers involved weighing the recycling bins thrice weekly Co-creation workshop with residents to test the effectiveness of recycling interventions information that would help households to recycle at home. Both ideas proved effective; together they increased overall recycling weight by approximately 20% in trial runs. Following the success of these trial runs, NEA will work with stakeholders to explore the possibility of implementing the ideas in more areas of Singapore.
