SEI has partnered various bodies within the National University of Singapore (NUS), namely the Master of Science in Environmental Management (MEM), the Bachelor of Environmental Studies (BES) and the Asia-Pacific Centre for Environmental Law (APCEL), to launch the flagship Asia Environment Lecture (AEL) in October 2013. AEL provides a unique opportunity for knowledge exchange and networking with world leaders who have the expertise and experience in Asian environmental sustainability.
AEL will explore the range of environmental issues constantly in the media forefront today. Cities continue to face the challenges of population growth, inadequate clean water and energy supplies, deteriorating public health and hygiene, environmental degradation, climate change impacts, and the pollution of air, land and water. While there is a need for sustainable environmental management practices, the current imperatives for national development, industrialisation and a functioning market economy should not be compromised. As such, the right environmental policies and laws, coupled with a holistic approach involving stakeholder partnerships, are essential in addressing these challenges.
AEL’s inaugural lecture was on “Transitioning towards Environmentally Sustainable Growth in Asia and the Pacific: Key Issues, Progress and Drivers of Change” by Dr Bindu N Lohani, Vice President for Knowledge Management and Sustainable Development in the Asian Development Bank.

The Innovation for the Environment Series (IES) is a knowledge-sharing platform created by Singapore Environment Institute that aims to spark off innovation for the environment. This lecture series will explore new ideas and examine linkages between technology, smart design and environmental management. It hopes to serve as a catalyst for critical thinking, by inviting thought leaders to provide insights into environmental issues. This in turn could lead to innovative solutions and ideas towards environmental sustainability.
