Many people here are intrigued by the weather. There are, however, very few books written specifically to explain the weather systems we experience here in Singapore. The Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) has thus published “The Weather and Climate of Singapore” to help readers appreciate the weather which influences our lives in many ways. The author of the book is Ms Micheline Fong, a senior meteorologist from the MSS.
The book is divided into three sections. The first section presents the general climate of Singapore. While Singapore does not have four distinct seasons found in the temperate countries, it does experience monsoons. This section explains the characteristics of the monsoon seasons and the inter-monsoon periods, and the weather systems which can bring heavy rain, such as Northeast Monsoon surges, “Sumatra” squalls and convective thunderstorms induced by day-time heating. The section also explains how weather observations are carried out using conventional and specialized meteorological systems, the forecasting process and the challenges in forecasting the weather in the tropics.
The second section of the book is devoted to a discussion on the different types of low, medium and high level clouds which can be observed over Singapore.
The third section of the book covers the local weather phenomena experienced in Singapore, including thunderstorms and lightning, waterspouts, mist and fog, and other interesting optical phenomena, such as rainbows and haloes.
