Industrial Ecology - Striking a Balance Between Nature and the Bottomline
By Associate Professor Wang Jing-Yuan (NTU) &
Ms Ishita Chelliah (GIST-NTU)
25 November 2005

Industrial Ecology (IE) is an exciting new branch of study that seeks to address and counter environmentally unsustainable methods in modern industrial production. Applying ecological principles to business practices, IE points to a new way that businesses can minimise costs from the usage of natural resources and the burden to the environment while maximising corporate profits and higher productivity.
Jointly presented by the Singapore Environment Institute (SEI), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the German Institute of Technology (GIST), this talk will cover the concept of IE and brings the audience through a case-study of IE in action at a company.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Dr Wang Jing-Yuan is an Associate Professor in the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering of the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Director of NTU’s Environmental Engineering Research Centre (EERC). He has over 16 years of environmental working experience in consulting, teaching, and research in the US, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore and is a registered professional engineer of the State of Georgia in the US. Dr. Wang specializes in solid waste resource management, contaminated site remediation, and environmental management. Over the last six years with NTU, he has been working on several research projects including bioconversion of organic waste (food waste, sewage sludge, horticultural waste, etc.) for energy and resource recovery and cleanup of contaminated soils, sediments, and sludge using bioremediation coupled with electrokinetic treatment. Dr. Wang is also looking into the solutions to address various environmental issues in the economically developing countries.
Ms Ishita Chelliah is currently a Masters student with the GIST-NTU Masters of Science (Industrial Ecology) programme. She is currently an intern with Jebsen & Jessen (SEA) and is completing her thesis under the guidance of Prof. Wang Jing-Yuan. She will share on how IE based approaches are being implemented in Jebsen & Jessen (SEA) and the job scope for yesterday's Environmental Manager as today's Industrial Ecologist in the course of her internship with the company.
