In the discussion that followed, Jiangsu Party Secretary Li Yuanchao expressed a strong interest in finding out more on how Singapore could help in resolving the pollution problem in Lake Tai. Lake Tai’s drainage areas receive 56 billion tons of sewage discharge each year from homes, farms and industrial sources. Residents of Wuxi (无锡) would have to go without water if Lake Tai were to be invaded by the blue-green algae. He further suggested that NEA could help train local Chinese officials in managing the pollution in Lake Tai.
