Professional Sharing Series 20 November 2009
The environmental community was given a peek into the sustainability 'secrets' of a global corporation when Mr. Clay Nesler, Vice President of Global Energy and Sustainability, Johnson Controls, delivered a slew of winning energy and environmental management best practices at SEI's Professional Sharing Series (PSS) on 20 Nov 09.
Speaking to a theatrette packed with participants from public agencies, environmental and energy services companies, Mr. Nesler revealed how Johnson Controls (JC), a major energy services corporation, applied sustainability-centric principles to the company’s triple-bottom line – People, Planet and Profit. Mr. Nesler had cumulated decades of energy management experience and expertise, having led many successful energy improvement building projects in the US, several which received environmental accolades.

Mr. Nesler encouraged organisations to start minimising their environmental impact by first working on being energy efficient, as that was the key to cost-effective carbon reduction. As a first step, he suggested companies to embark on an 'energy hunt’ programme to identify low cost, no cost & high cost opportunities to lower their carbon intensity. He also encouraged organisations to monitor energy improvements in their operations with sustainability ratings and tools such as ‘plant sustainability scorecards’ and ‘integrative design checklists'. Besides systems monitoring, organisations need to engage in strategic carbon management and reduction planning for the future as well.
The lecture climaxed in a short video documentary on the high-profile energy upgrade of the Empire State Building of New York City, which is expected to result in a 38% energy reduction when the project is completed.

The audience rated Mr. Nesler highly for his knowledge in the presentation topic and found the numerous energy efficiency examples practical and insightful. They also liked the experience sharing from a management point of view.
In Singapore, we hope to see more local corporations rise to become global leaders in sustainability. SEI will continue to invite leaders in their fields to share their experiences with our audience here.
