While most of us know that outdoor air pollution is detrimental to our health, very few are aware that indoor air pollution can be equally damaging. Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is of particular concern since most of us spend a substantial amount of our time indoors, be it at our office, home or other commercial buildings and establishments.

IAQ refers to the quality of the air inside an air-conditioned environment. The quality of indoor air is determined by mainly by the levels of indoor airborne contaminants and the thermal environmental conditions. Poor IAQ causes ill health such as ‘sick building syndrome’ (SBS) and building-related illness which affects the health and well-being of occupants, and contributes to lost productivity and absenteeism at work. The causes of SBS are often complex and difficult to diagnose because of the number and variety of possible sources, and varying individual sensitivities when exposed to the same source.

This 2.5-day course enhances the participants’ understanding of the fundamentals of IAQ, standards governing IAQ in Singapore, and air-conditioning and mechanical ventilation systems (ACMV) and IAQ. Topics include sources of indoor contaminants and their control, mould assessment, clean-up and remediation, effective filtration and air cleaning technologies for rectifying specific IAQ problems, risk assessment and effective water treatment in controlling the Legionella Bacteria. In addition, IAQ audit and measurement of IAQ parameters will be discussed together with a walk-through building inspection on cooling towers and Air Handling Units (AHUs) as well as group discussions on field measurement of IAQ parameters.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Participants who have completed the course will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamentals of indoor air quality and the factors affecting it

  • Become familiar with the standards and guidelines on IAQ in Singapore: SS 554, WHSA, Infectious Disease Act, EPHA, BCA Green Mark Scheme and SEC Green Labels

  • Understand the requirements for IAQ competency

  • Understand ACMV systems with the aim to provide good practices for regular maintenance

  • Be able to conduct an IAQ Audit and measurement

  • Be able to provide customised solutions to specific IAQ problems

  • Be able to make a decision for a water treatment programme used in cooling towers
