INTRODUCTION

A fuel cell is an electrochemical energy conversion device that combines hydrogen & oxygen from the air to produce electrical power without combustion. Increasingly, fuel cell technology is gaining popularity as a viable alternative energy sources that is being tapped upon to meet our energy needs. It can potentially help us reduce our reliance on fossil fuels imports and cut down on our greenhouse gas emissions.  However, installing fuel cell system requires capital investment.  Therefore creative applications and sound engineering are essential to make fuel cell-powered projects feasible, cost-effective and lasting.

The fuel cell is an attractive technology because it generates electricity with very little pollution. The by-product from a hydrogen fuel cell is water.  By integrating this technology into building systems, manufacturing or vehicle engines, it can lead to innovative designs, cut down on energy bills, and improve the building’s environmental performance.

The seminar aims to build up awareness & local capability in fuel cell technology, increase appreciation of benefits of fuel cell, and encourage the implementation of such projects in Singapore. Visits to sites with fuel cell installations will be included in the seminar.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This seminar covers basic introduction in technology development, component selection, design, application, maintenance, etc.  Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to understand the technical and economic aspects of fuel cell-powered technology, and apply the principles learnt to make fuel cell projects more innovative or cost-effective.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

  • Engineers

  • Consultants

  • Business Leaders

  • Facility Managers & Executives

  • Material Suppliers

ACCREDITATION

This course is accredited under the Professional Engineers Board's Continuing Professional Development Programme for Engineers in Singapore. Participants will gain 7 PDU units upon completion of the course. Course participants must complete this course with at least 75% attendance rate.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Mr Cham Yew Thean
Fuel Cell Community Manager
Temasek Polytechnic

Mr. Cham Yew Thean leads the 18 staff strong fuel cell programme in Temasek Polytechnic. Currently, his team is involved in industry collaboration fuel cell projects with fuel cell companies, overseas universities, local universities, ASTAR Research Institutes such as SIMTECH and IMRE as well as national defense agency DSTA. He is also spearheading the Singapore Fuel Cell Community supported by EDB. This initiative comes at the initial phase of Singapore's plan to set up a fuel cell industry hub which will position the country as a place for innovation in fuel cell technology and applications. The S'pore Fuel Cell Community was successfully launched on 26 March 2007 with 17 founding companies. Currently, his research interests are in the area of PEM fuel cell power conditioning system control and integration. Mr. Cham has extensive design experiences in the area of power electronic converters and control. He is currently a senior member of IEEE and MIES. He also possesses an MBA (Management of Technology) from NTU and a MEng (Power Electronics Applications) from NUS. He graduated with a BEng (First Class Honours) from NUS EE in 1991.

Mr Avier Lim
Founder & Chief Executive Officer, Gashub Technology Pte Ltd

Graduated with a business administration degree, Avier Lim started his own business in 1992 in the field of gas engineering, gas system, installation design and product development for the commercial, industrial and residential markets. The business has since expanded and evolved into Gashub Technology in 2001, which specializes in the research, development, production and commercialization of various renewable energy technologies. Today Gashub manufactures more than 75% of all components used in its fuel cell stack assembly, giving the competitive edge and leadership in cost and pricing control. Avier oversees Gashub Technology’s business planning, operations as well as its R&D in green energy products to its commercialization. He has also contributed to several publications, conferences & patents on fuel cells.
