MODULE INTRODUCTION
Environmental science is increasingly relied on to provide an analytical assessment of the extent and intensity of human impacts on the environment. An objective assessment of cause and effect based on science will minimize the subjectivity and emotion that is popularly attached to environmental issues. Although science is still somewhat limited in some respects e.g. determination of environmental carrying capacity based on ecosystem processes, the present state of knowledge has reached a level where science can help with more accurate prediction or identification of expected impacts of human activities. There is improved understanding of the importance of biodiversity and its influence on biogeochemical pathways, and on ecosystem functioning. Conservation science provides a more wholesome approach to environmental management and contributes to the development of more effective management strategies such as integrated management.
