MODULE INTRODUCTION
This module will introduce the multi-disciplinary nature of environmental planning, by exploring the basic concepts and procedures that are normally used to address environmental issues in land use planning. The shifts in urban planning thinking since the Brundtland Commission, and the rational model for incorporating environment issues for strategic and site planning will be explored. In particular, the module will discuss planning strategies, including the compact city model, brownfield regeneration, creative infills, decentralisation, low impact developments, transit-oriented developments, urban villages, etc, as they have been implemented in other cities. At the local planning level, the processes of plan making and implementation, including the integration of EIA procedures, introduction of landscape ecology concepts, green wave movements, public participation and the concept of social capital in planning would be explored.
