SYNOPSIS

This practical workshop seeks to guide and encourage participants to roll up their sleeves and get down to applying basic eco-packaging concepts covered in the Eco Packaging PSS to improve actual packaging and start saving resources. Participants will be involved in practical exercises to evaluate and (re)-design a piece of packaging (either retail or transit packaging) according to the principles of Design for Environment. The workshop will also feature further case studies to provide in-depth discussions on environmental performance, functionality and market acceptability of the package under scrutiny.

Participants are encouraged to bring a packaging sample from their own organisation (either retail or transit packaging) or something they are interested to work on to the workshop. Please expect group discussions and presentations in this highly interactive workshop.

  • R&D Personnel
  • Packaging Designers
  • Creative Communications Personnel
  • Logistics Managers/Executives
  • Packaging Consultants

DETAILED PROGRAMME
AGENDA PART 1 (9.00 am – 10.30am)

The FIRST SECTION introduces Packaging minimisation and gives delegates an overview of important contextual issues relating to packaging and the environment. A simple QUIZ give delegates the chance to reflect on the issues. It also allows for short discussion points to be raised early on.

  • Introductions
  • Quiz
  • Presentation on cleaner design for packaging
  • Context – case snapshots (Transit (secondary) and retail packaging)

AGENDA PART 2: Practical workshop (10.45am – 12.45pm)

These principles are explored in more detail through a practical exercise in PART 2. Further case examples explain simple lessons that improve environmental performance of packaging while demonstrating increased functionality and market acceptability of the pack under scrutiny. Participants then deploy these principles in a small group activity to improve a piece of packaging (either retail or transit). The chosen pack is evaluated [using checklist] and redesigned according to the principles of Design for Environment. The redesign is presented back to the group through annotated sketches and notes. [On sketch sheet provided]. This generates further discussion.

  • Packaging evaluation
  • Packaging redesign
