For the financial year ended 31 March 2006, NEA incurred a deficit of S$277.6 million before government grants. During the year, NEA received a total operating grant of S$289.5 million from the Government. Thus, NEA ended the year with a net surplus of S$9.5 million.

NEA's operating income of S$53.0 million for FY05 came mainly from fees received for managing of Housing & Development Board's (HDB) markets and hawker centres, provision of meteorological and other services, collection of fees from licences, permits and fines.

Operating expenditure for the year totalled S$330.6 million. This was mainly made up of staff and related costs, public area cleaning and landscaping services, maintenance of specialised and industrial equipment, maintenance of building, HDB markets and hawker centres and office premises, purchase of industrial supplies, upgrading and improvement of markets and hawker centres, depreciation, and vector control services.
