| You can be an Everyday Superhero and save the planet. No, it does not require donning a mask and a tight, colourful suit with a cape. You can be an Everyday Superhero just by changing your everyday habits and behaviours to reduce energy.
That was the message at the launch of the Climate Change Awareness Programme (CCAP) in April 2006 at The Atrium@Orchard, spearheaded by the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) and supported by NEA. As the name of the campaign implies, the aim of the year-long programme is to raise awareness among Singaporeans about climate change by instilling and empowering the man on the street that they can effect profound and significant change to save the planet from global warming.
"Everyday Superhero" was appropriately the theme for the programme, with the tagline "Save the Planet One Day at a Time". "We realized that many Singaporeans think that saving the environment is something for people and corporations with power, influence and money," said Mr Howard Shaw, Executive Director at SEC. "By practicing some or all of the habits and behaviours to reduce energy usage and improve fuel efficiency, households and motorists can help slow down the effects of climate change and protect and preserve our environment."
Targeted at the younger generation, a fun and interactive website "www.everydaysuperhero.com.sg" was created for the programme where the public learnt about the causes and effects of climate change, and picked up simple habits that they could adopt to be an Everyday Superhero.
In conjunction with the launch, an exhibition where the public gained tips on how to reduce daily energy consumption was held. It also showcased energy-labelled refrigerators and air-conditioners. |
